Angry *linux* installation time

ok guys:

i've just bought my new p4 on an ASUS p4s800d m/b.

first thing i do, is reach for the linux (fedora) disks...

I hit bug heaven: ant even boot the frekin installer with an error, something to do with pci and acpi and irq routing... *grrr*

it tells me to try boot installer with 'linux pci=noacpi' command, i do it, then it bitches again saying stuff about the pci again. this time it tells me to try another command, 'linux pci=usepriqmask'.... i add them as one command when booting on the cd as:

linux pci=noacpi pci=usepriqmask

it finally boots the installer and i install....

after that, i reboot after install (so far so good)

grub loads, and i choose the fedora boot. it loads the commands that is in the boot parameter, then halts (as it seems).

I think i should try adding the 'pci=noacpi pci=usepriqmask' command to the boot parameters, i do it and it boots a little bit further, to where it says:

welcome to fedora linux

etc etc [ok]

(sorta thing)

it then (being it fedora) gets out of that and tries to go to gui and boot the way fedora does, but when it loads gui and changes resolution etc, it just halts....

*PLEASE HELP *

if anyone has anything to share, or has had this prob, tell me how to fix asap, as I am now forced to run windows 98ce on a laggy old lappy *meh*

help me save my machine please!

thx all ;D

Hi

Sounds like your graphics setup is incorrect. An easy way round this would be to boot into console mode only. The only way I know of doing this is by changing it to boot to init level 3 in the /etc/inittab file.
Change the line id:5:initdefault to id:3:initdefault.

As you can't actually boot to change the file, I'd use a rescue disk or bootable distro, mount the file system
and then change it.

You should eb able to sort you graphics out after that.

Note: There's prob a way to boot into console mode by passing an arguement to grub - I just don't know it!

cheers for reply, but it isn't the graphics card. It is a known issue with the main board but I hoped someone here could shed some extra light on it ... :/

Its all about the IRQ values not being set right or something like that :S

nm

thanks all the same

When grub loads just choose to edit the boot parameters and put a '3' at the end of the 'kernel' line.

The append " linux noacpi " donnt work in my laptop compaq but " linux acpi=off" corrected the problem (with Debian/knoppix, not with Fedora, ok!) Try this, ist simple an perhaps work.
