Angry Why do errors happen?

Hello all.

The subject of the message might sound kindof silly, but really, what cause or what do I need to look for to prevent the errors that happen to a file system and that you can only repair with a manual fsck?

One of my filesystems marked itself as read-only after the following error ocurred (from /var/log/messages)(I separated eac line for readability):

Code:
qonos kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sda7): ext3_free_blocks_sb: bit already cleared for block 107446800

qonos kernel: Aborting journal on device sda7. Sep 21 09:12:41 qonos kernel: ext3_abort called.

qonos kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sda7): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal

qonos kernel: Remounting filesystem read-only

qonos kernel: ext3_free_inode: aborting transaction: Journal has aborted in __ext3_journal_get_write_access<2>EXT3-fs error (device sda7) in ext3_free_inode: Journal has aborted Sep 21 09:12:41 qonos kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sda7) in ext3_delete_inode: Journal has aborted

qonos kernel: __journal_remove_journal_head: freeing b_committed_data

After this happened, nobody could access it. I had to run fsck.ext3 -As manually to fix the errors.

Any advice or pointing to the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Tony.

I've gotten similar errors as a result of overheating. If fact, I've had to take the cover off my system box, and place a fan next to it to get it cool enough to run for extended periods of time.

My HDs all have individual fan coolers attached, but that wasn't enough to keep them cool.

I was trying to run six HD and 2 DVD drives in one box, with a 3 GH CPU, and the box was just too small. (Next upgrade will include a liquid-cooled box, but the accounting department [i.e., my wife] has to approve that first.)

Question Overheating: The only reason?

Thank you, PTrenholme.

As a matter of fact, that could definitely be a possibility, as the room where this box is located lacks any AC.
Is there a way to determine if this is the real cause? Does anybody know of any software to closely monitor
the temperature and how it is affecting the equipment? Could there be any other reasons why this can happen?

Thanks.
Tony.

If your drives are S.M.A.R.T., take a look at hddtemp. There are other monitoring tools avaliable. (Try Google to find some.) I'd list some, but I've got an appointment now. Sorry.

Could be Kernel marked it as read only, because it wanted to prevent writes to it for some reason. Then a crash happenened, so it never got unmarked.
