I know this has been asked alot on the forums but I've searched for hours and hours on the net and can't seem to get my sound problem resolved.
I'm a Fedora Core 2 user and the sound problems are driving me crazy now. I had no problems on FC1 but with ALSA I can't get it to work. I've made sure that all of the volume were levels were as loud as possible (in the taskbar and alsamixer).
Since messing around for goodness knows how long, I have managed to get CD's to play now which is a large improvement, but I still cannot play mp3's. XMMS-mp3 capability has been installed via Yum and I also tried Muine just incase.
The soundcard detection tool says that I'm using an Ensoniq ES1371 [Audio-PCI-97] (and the module is snd-ens1371).
Any help is greatly appreciated, this is really annoying me. I couldn't tell you how much I'd appreciate this getting fixed.
go to red hat button---> sound & Video---->SELECT Audio Player (XMMS) the player will start up
next....right click the xmms player SELECT
options--->Preferences
next click audio I/O plugins
SELECT CD Audio Player [libcdaudio.so]
next a window will open up.....
make sure DEVICE tab is selected.....under PLAY MODE analog is default. uncheck it and SELECT
digital audio extraction
Thanks a lot for your reply. I can't try it at the moment but I will do as soon as I can.
Will it work for other players though? I'm asking since that seems to be just XMMS preferences and not system wide. Just asking to check really. Can't wait to try it out..
from what i understand, ( somebody correct me if i'm wrong) xmms is the default player for fedora. you could try to follow the steps for other players but look at it this way, if you can get 1 player to work, then take it and run
CD Player is the player for nautilus, still trying to figure out that ones settings.( plays D's but no sound output)
this time scroll down to
mpeg layer 1/2/3 placeholder plugin [librh_mp3.so] click it once and go down to
the check box that says enable plugin un check it
next you might have to close out xmms and then restart it if you don't see the new plugin that you had up2date retrieve.
look for mpeg layer 1/2/3 player 1.2.10 [libmpg123.so] click it once and then go down to the check box and enable it exit xmms then retsart.
i should mention , did you do a sound card test???
make sure it works as well redhat ---->System Settings------> sound card detection
I have already installed the mp3 plugin for XMMS via Yum earlier so it's not because of it being restricted. Muine is another mp3 player but doesn't come with Fedora so I downloaded that and it doesn't play in there. The song length goes on but no sound.
Yes, I did a soundcard test many times but no sound comes out of it...the weird thing is CD's play so it could be a deeper problem..
Not sure if it's any help, but this is what got XMMS playing mp3s for me. I found the default volume control with the two tabs for OSS and Alsa very hit and miss - sometimes it woiuld work, more often either there was nothing at all or it was very quiet. I found also that some of the controls would not operate - the sliders would not move.
I apt-get installed gnome-alsamixer (or you could try just the terminal-based alsamixer) and this seemed to get hold of alsa and control it properly. My system uses the snd-via-82xx sound card and there are controls on the mixer which need to be fully up even though they don't seem to be relevant. After operating some of these, the sound came through loud and clear - and it has stayed that way.
Raptor102 - that has been disabled but I still get the same result.
Bob - Thanks for your suggestion, it's appreciated. However, it hasn't made any difference - all of the levels are up to the top in both Gnome alsamixer and alsamixer.
