Sound failure after update

Hey all -

I just installed Fedora Core 5 on my HP desktop, and am pretty happy with it so far. Last night I did a check and the "software updater" tool recommended that I let it put a bunch of updates on. I did, but...

When I woke up the next morning, it was done, and everything seemed fine, except that I noticed that I wasn't getting any sound.

Now, I'm able to detect my soundcard, and change the volume and everything, and I'm getting no error messages. The kernel module that it says I'm using is snd-via82xx. But no matter the application I try, no sound is coming out. I'm really not sure where to go from here.

Any ideas?

Oh really, someone must have had a similar experience! Nobody?
