i am running fedora core 9. After updating the dries repository with this command "name=Extra Fedora rpms dries - $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=http://dries.studentenweb.org/yum/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/dries" I cannot install any packages through yum. when i try i get this error message "Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit

Can anyone tell how to fix this problem or at least how to disable the dries repository or perhaps properly update it?
Did you try to use the link to http://dries.studentenweb.org in your browser? From there it should be clear that the repository to which you wish to connect was, essentially, a copy of the extras Fedora Core repositories. That repository was dropped when the "Core" designation of the Fedora releases was dropped, and the "extras" RPMs were merged with the "core" RPM in a single repository (called "everything," if you're interested).
If you enter http://dries.studentenweb.org/yum/fedora/linux/ in your browser, you'll see that the site only has RPMs for Fedora Core version 1, 2, and 3. That suggests to me that the dries repository has been abandoned for several years now, and that there is no point in trying to connect a Fedora 9 distribution to it.
The site does include instructions for accessing FC 4 RPMs at http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/dries.ulyssis.org/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/dries/RPMS/, but nothing more recent than that.
Note: No fedora distribution older than Fedora 8 is still maintained, and Fedora 8 maintenance will be suspended shortly after Fedora 10 is released later this month.
Dries repo, formerly part of RPMForge, is merging with DAG and ATRPMs to form RPMRepo.
So yes, it's no good for F9 at this time, but might soon offer packages for F9+. BTW, F10 release has been pushed back to at least last week of Novermber 2008: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/10/Schedule
It's possible that certain F8 packages might work OK on F9, but you would use them at your own risk. I carried over a few from F8. YMMV. Here's the repo files on my F8 box:
I admit that I did no more than look at where the link he posted took me, and that I didn't bother to look elsewhere for "dries" after the "ulyssis" repro link "barfed" at me when I tried it from F9.
But the OP was trying to use the "studenten" link, and -- as you point out -- that's somewhat obsolete.

Disable the DRIES repo: Edit (as root user) the file: /etc/yum.repos.d/dries.repo and change enabled=1 to enabled=0. Or, simply delete the file (not recommended - you may want to reference it later).
