NO sound after I switched from Fedora 17 to Fedora 18

I made the jump from 17 to 18, except I have absolutely no sound. My computer has Intel sound built into the motherboard, and it worked fine with Fedora 17 but not with 18. Alsamixer seems to find the sound devices, but I can't seem to get the right combination of switches. A lot of people feel that its a kernel issue.
Anyone who may have had this problem an found a workaround, your assistance would be appreciated.

off hand i do not know
But
if this is a "upgrade" using "fedup" or the dvd
that can and will cause some issues

or

is this a 100% new install of fedora 18
as in you wiped the drive and did a fresh install with 18

if a " upgrade" then that might be the problem

Install the package pavucontrol, it is pulseAudio volume control,

You will find it in Menu/Multimedia after install.

Fedora often defaults the "master" sound level to zero. Check your sound level settings. (I actually like that default, since the system sounds disturb my wife and cat.)
