new monitor X doesn't come up

Hi,

I just installed a new monitor on a K6 Athlon 1500 with F22 and no X came up. It had been running MATE 1.10. Is there a command I can issue to tell Xorg to reconfigure itself?

Thanks!

As a first step, rename any xorg.conf files in the various default locations for your system and any file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* that contains a section about Monitor. Xorg should just pick it up. Then you can go back to adding back the Sections and files you want.

Hi. First you must do a backup of files in /etc/X11
Then shutdown X killing aplications like xdm,kdm,gdm,etc;
then execute from a terminal:

Xorg -configure

Then you can configure X from de first step.

Good luck.

Sounds like you can get to a text mode login, but the GUI doesn't come up. If you haven't done any configuring, then it's unlikely that there will be any config files about monitors. X does all that internally, so you needn't concern yourself with deleting anything.

As for using "Xorg -configure", well I haven't had that work for years now. I find it's broken. It usually produces an xorg.conf file but when I place it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's just never successfully brought up the GUI. Usually I got the "no valid screens were found" message which is a generic message that can mean one of many problems including driver problems.

The way I would start with this problem is to boot to a text mode prompt and run: startx. If X doesn't come up, have a look at the log file at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, to see what it says the errors are. If your monitor gets to a text prompt, it's likely it's okay and that maybe the video card drivers might need attention to get to the GUI.
