mkinitrd package dependency for kernel?
I am running Fedora 7.
When I run yum, I get the following output:
Code:
root [~] $ yum update
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Resolving Dependencies
--> Running transaction check
---> Package kernel-debug.i686 0:2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 set to be updated
---> Package kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 set to be updated
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 set to be updated
---> Package kernel-headers.i386 0:2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 set to be updated
--> Processing Dependency: mkinitrd >= 6.0.9-7.1 for package: kernel
--> Processing Dependency: mkinitrd >= 6.0.9-7.1 for package: kernel-debug
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: mkinitrd >= 6.0.9-7.1 is needed by package kernel
Error: Missing Dependency: mkinitrd >= 6.0.9-7.1 is needed by package kernel-debug
When I try to list the mkinitrd package, I get the following:
Code:
root [~] $ yum list |grep mkinitrd
mkinitrd.i386 6.0.9-5 installed
mkinitrd-devel.i386 6.0.9-5 fedora
This is obviously not normal (at least I don't think so) for Fedora. Why would they provide an updated kernel, and not the required updated dependencies?

I am facing this problem too.
I think this is a mistake in the management of repositories.
Give them a day or so and try to update your system again.

In a way, then, I'm glad it's not just me who's got this problem. That means there should be a solution, as you said, very soon.

Hello everyone,
It's happened before. Someone probably just didn't or couldn't get the new mkinitrd into the repository in time. The last time this happened, it was fixed by the next day.
Since I had a large list of updates besides that kernel, I updated but excluded the kernel. If you would like to update everything but the kernel, you can do it this way...
Code:
yum --exclude=kernel* update
Tomorrow try a normal update again, and you will probably pick up that new kernel.

Ok, I tried it the next day, and, voila, the correct version of mkinitrd was available. All nively installed now.
Thanks for your input, guys.

SlowJet at FedoraForums said that the problem with the update that day was not that the mkinitrd package did not get into the repo, but that the new kernel was put in there too early. I only mention this for the record or anyone that cares. That fact doesn't change anything for me. I excluded the kernel to allow the other updates available that day to run. The situation with the kernel was corrected the next day, and I updated it then.
