To create a desktop link to UT2004, right click on the empty desktop and chose Create New-->File-->Link to Application. Specify the path to the UT2004 binary in the "Application" tab.
As far as installing the .tar patch goes, in KDE should be able to right click on the tar file and chose "Ark" from the menu. This will open the file in Ark, which is like WinZip for KDE. Follow the instructions in the patches README, but I think all you need to do is unzip it to the UT2004 directory (could be wrong, though.)
With regards to sound issues: try opening starting the game through the Konsole. This way, if there are sound initialisation errors, they'll be printed in the terminal. Quit the game right a way and cut and paste the text that's been dumped into konsole. Search the forums first to see who else has had this problem and how they fixed it. Failing that, open up a new thread in the appropriate LinuxQuestions.org forum and hopefully someone can help!

Where is the desktop icon located for ut2004?

Is there a no disk hack for this game? I only have once CD rom and would like to have to use it everytime I want to play the game...I think ut2003 has one but not sure about ut2004.

RagingIfrit,
you're in baltimore, md? Me too. Where abouts? Also, please visit http://www.marylandlangamers.net if you're interested in hooking up at the best LAN party in MD! =]
Hey, well I'm not exactly in Baltimore, I live in Ellicott City, which is just outside. I just figured no one has heard of Ellicott City, but most people know Baltimore. The LAN party looks great, and I would come, but I have no good games to play. I have almost no money also, and if I don't have Call of Duty, CS, or any others its not gonna be that great (I do have UT2k4, but its not working on Windows, thats why I have to get Linux running.
