Help Setting Up Wireless Access Point for Newbie Please! :-)

Hi All,

I've just installed Fedora 9 and am in the process of getting help setting up my nVidia video card. In the mean time I thought I'd go to item 2 on my list and try and get my wireless internet connection working.

I'm a bit confused about some of the information I'm asked for...

SSID: I know this.
Mode: Infrastructure or Ad-hoc? Not sure what this means...
BSSID: Not sure about this either...
MAC Address: I have 3 listed on my router page... One is under 'Wireless', one under 'LAN IP Address' and one under 'WAN'. Which one should I be using?
Security: Key or Passphrase? I THINK this should be 'Key' as I'm using 128-bit WEP key.
Key: I know this.
WEP Index: Have no idea what this is... It defaults to 1.
Authentication: Open System or Shared? I assume I go for 'Shared' as all machines on the network use the same WEP key...
Address: Not sure what this is supposed to be...
Netmask: Is this the same as a 'Subnet mask'? If so, then I think I have this...
Gateway: Should this be the internal or external IP address of the router? I have both...
DNS Servers: Got 2 of these. No problems here...
Search Domains: Not sure what this is...

I'm using a Linksys WUSB11 ver. 2.6 Wireless Access Point.

Any help with this stuff would be greatly appreciated - I'm a Linux and CLI newbie, so a 'For Dummies' approach would be useful! :-)

Mode: Infrastructure is the one you probally want to use
BSSID: the SSID of the base station
MAC Address: the wireless MAC of your base station
Security: key is for direct entry, passphrase is a word/phrase/text that is converted to a key.
WEP Index: just leave it set to 1
Address: the ip address you want for this connection
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: the ip address of your base station (192.168.1.1 etc...)
DNS Servers: take a look at OpenDNS for you dns ip's
Search Domains: you probally don't need to worry about this, just leave it blank

This should get you going, just use Google to find answers to your specific needs.
But most important is to change your default username/password of your wireless devices, and enable the strongest possiable encryption (fyi: WEP is flawed) and MAC filters.

Thanks for the reply useGNU...

I assume when you say 'base station' you're referring to the router?

Will look into the other stuff you mentioned and give it a shot :-)
