Help needed on Fedora 9 network printer setup

Hi Everybody,

Just installed Fedora 9 on my machine and want to setup printer. No experience about this and asked few coworkers here, seems nobody actually know how to do it. Tried several times, not success. Need your help to make it work.

Company has few printers, each of them has a label on it to tell us the server and printer name, say "\\wasp\TOSHIBA PCL6" or "\\peaprn1\CTHP9050DN". Most of us use Windows XP. Setup print on Windows is an easy job. But not easy for linux.

Anybody here can help step by step to setup please?

thanks,

James

There's a windows-like wizard in both kde and gnome which will guide you step by step through the process of adding a new printer (You will need to know the name or IP of the printer). Alternatively, type http://localhost:631 which will open CUPS control panel and find the printer you are looking for. It should be pretty straightforward (unless there are some problems specific to your company's network)

Yes, I tried http://localhost:631 several times but looks like it cannot find those printers on the printer server. I tried ipp, http and socket. But none found my printers. Looks like it always return a default printer list for a particular maker.

If they are true network printers, they'll be listening on port 9100, but from the looks of it, they are merely printers attached to pc's and then shared through windows file and printer sharing.

It is possible to connect to those as well.

On the second page of the CUPS add printer wizard, select `Windows printer via SAMBA' in the device dropdown box.

The device uri will be (from one of your examples)

smb://peaprn1/CTHP9050DN

Click continue, and then choose the proper driver. If yours is not listed, then you'll have to go hunt for the PPD file that came with the printer install disk.

Good luck

Best regards

I'm not sure will help, but if the network printer in question is on ethernet, it may have a set IP address, which you can use. This is how I have my network printer set.
My printer has been set with IP 192.168.0.10, and I have set that up in CUPS with a specified URI as follows:
URI socket://192.168.0.10, then given the printer a name.
All works well, as Windows boxes access it as well without any problems.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Terry

This might not be exactly what you are looking for but might hint at something you haven't tried again:
