Gnome has sound/switch to KDE no sound

Installed Fedora Core2 and Gnome has sound when you test sound at the sound card detection but when you install KDE there is no sound at just scratchy noise at the sound card detection test

Have your tried kmix? That's KDE's mixer program. In KDE, press ALT-F2 and type in "kmix", then make sure that all the volume is turned up. Be sure to check the "advanced" (I think that's what it's called) box and mess around with the stuff in there. Sometimes the "Optical xxxx" box being checked can cause problems. Also try playing with the various sliding bars. I recall PCM making scratchy sounds if it's up too high.

Good Luck!

Check the Sound Daemon..If you are running Arts then that is probably the only reason for the scratchy sound. I've had problems with it before giving substandard audio quality when everything was working just great with Windows.

Or you might try changing your Sound System altogether
Go to Control center -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System -> Hardware tab

In the Audio Devices you will find the many Sound Systems available on your system. Try running OSS instead of ALSA. Maybe that'd help.

Excellent!

I'm glad you both got it working! It's soooo satisfying when that happens :-) .

If you found any of these posts helpful just hit the affero button and let everybody know how cool LQ/Linux/GNU/etc. is (and maybe even donate a few dollars)!

Have a good one.
