I have just installed fedora on a Dell 1100 laptop. Everything is running great except X will not run at full screen. I receive no error messages. Any ideas?
I have seen this problem on RedHat 9.0. Try changing the screen resolution to 1024x768. It stays at 800x600 by default. You can change this thru system settings (may be different) > Display or just run xf86config in a terminal
Hope it helps

I have that problem while installing Mandrake 9.1 on my Dell inspirion 1100, but I don't know what display to choose and when I run Mandrake I have no GUI
Hi...
I have been trying to install linux on my dell inspiron 1100...
tried 7.3 but it did not recognize the intel 845 display card..
now with redhat 9, it recognises the card but says unknown monitor....
the install is complete and it shows me both the text as well as graphics mode as a tiny 7" window....
any clues how i can fix it?
I have tried changing the monitor type to dell laptop display panel and the generic laptop panel ... 1024X but its the same
even selecting a 14" svga shows the same thing...
Dell use Intel's North Bridge the 82845G with integrated graphics and share system memory.
The 82845 has a faster draw rate then the 82830G and the i810. But there are a few changes in the chip for example no over plane.
The main difference to users is they changed the memory allocation.
So as ac_dispatcher nicely provided the link u will have to run a patch called the 845patch.
This will allocate memory to the graphics and enable full screen. here is the link http://geocities.com/randomnumberge...845patch.tar.gz
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Xfree86 driver i810 is very pore performer and is probably at worst with the 845G.
If U can afford $69 US go here www.xig.com
They have a driver for the intel series with almost a 10 fold performance increase.
I went from about 1 frame every few seconds to full game speed with Quake 3.
Xig benchmarked it from 80,000 char/sec to 600,000.
Also supports dual head.
I am apparently having a worse time than normal for a Fedora 1.0 install. I just (12/30/2003) bought two Dell Inspiron 1100 laptops and I installed Fedora Core 1.0 (I installed everything).
On the first attempt I installed drivers from Intel's site and the 845patch. Everything went smoothly until I tried to start X. The XF86Config file was generated by Fedora and appeared to be correct. I added a VideoRAM line to setup 10000 kB of video memory. I ran the 845patch from commandline to also have 10000 kB and it said it worked. I then ran 'init 5' to start X and it blinks 3 times and dies.
I am reinstalling. I hate to say it but after some work I got everything working in Windows XP. It had some major display weirdisms until I installed the correct drivers, but all is fine now so I know that the hardware is ok.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to have to use windows!
Not sure why but I re-installed and picked and LCD panel 1024x768 and X started!
It still does not run full screen but there have been some posts that make me think that will be fairly easy. I am back in linux! Man that feels good. Now off to make the wireless network work.
I setup a Dell Inspiron 1100 with BIOS Revision A26 and the Intel Extreme Graphics i845G chipset. I hope this helps someone. I had trouble with the first install of Fedora 1.0 but after I picked the monitor 'LCD 1024x768 panel' during the second install everything seemed to work (except it was only using a small part of the screen). I noticed that if you have not allocated enough video memory you can only run in 16 bit mode. That is what was initially killing X11.
I had to do the following to get the box working with X11 in full screen. First I reinstalled and then did NOT install the intel graphics drivers from intel.com. Then I installed the 845patch (google.com found it for me). Then I edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config file to add a line in the modules section that said:
VideoRAM 16384
Then I added a line in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
/usr/bin/845patch 16384
Then I edited the /boot/grub/grub.conf and placed vga=773 to the line with the kernel and its args. That makes the ttys fill the screen but it hoses the GUI boot. I may take that back out but for now I like it.
roguefalcon i have a question i notice u have the same bios as me.
Have u been able to get the onboard modem working.
As people with inspiron 1100 and my modem ver have got it to work but i cannot. So i was thinking mabe it's a bios thing.
Anyway have u been able to get the modem working and is it a conexant modem pci:id 8086:24c6
drivers available from www.linuxant.com
I had similiar problems with my Fedora Core 1 install on an Inspiron 1100. I was running BIOS version A27. All I did was update the BIOS to A29 with the download from Dell's site. This BIOS update addresses a lot of the problems reported above.
Fedora 6 on dell inspiron 1100 - Display problems??? Certainly!!!
Hi,
I have a dell inspiron 1100 and fedora 6 identifies the notorius 845 displat card (Brookdale and all that...).
Despite the fact that BIOS is update to A32 using the linux Micah Cochran distribution, the display is still a sad 800x600 millions of colours. I did install the 845 patch, the 855 patch and the i915 graphics driver but nothing seemed to work.
I also tried SUse 10.2 (same thing...) and only Linspire live CD works full screen. I would like to use fedora though.
I have an Inspiron 1100 I have ran Redhat, Suse 92, Suse 10, suse 10.2, Debian, and Slackware and have always had the problem the first time I boot up, Run the XConfiguration tool for whichever distro you have if you have Suse it is SAX2, anyway You must set your monitor up as a VEGA or Generic, and to whichever resolution you would like.
This works every time, If it doesnt, try another Monitor, one will eventually work, Just use Vega or Generic.
i had a similar problem, which might help. i had a resolution problem while trying to install windows xp.
apparently even the boot up screen was in a smaller resolution so i figured out it had to be from the BIOS - the display controller.
there was an option somewhere on the 5th-6th page that had at the bottom display type - and you can select the correct resolution there, which will follow throughout anything you're laptop will display.
