FTP setup and xmms hotkeys

Hey all I'm a newbee to linux and I just have a couple of questions.

To start off I was wondering if anyone knew of any xmms hotkey plugins so I can use my numberpad to control music for xmms version 1.2.10, I found a hotkey plugin for xmms but i'm pretty sure it doesn't work w/ this version because when I ran ./configure it told me I didn't have xmms version 0.9.5.1.

Next up I'd like to set up an FTP client on my computer and I have no idea where to start at all. I just know someone who has one on thier computer and It's great for getting thier files from their computer at school, and really anywhere. So any help to guide me through this process would be awesome. If it makes a difference the files on the FTP sever need to be accessable from a windows computer (why would a school want to use something free and stable like linux as thier OS?)

Thanks a lot for any help
