Fedora 7 - GDM problem

Hi all,

Just got the new Fed7 from a magazine and loaded it. So kinda new to this!!

All is installed but cannot for the life of me get gdm to load up on system boot. Only when I log in via command line and enter gdm it loads up. Can someone help.

I know its a simple line to edit in a file but not sure which one on this dist.

Some threads say its the desktop file in /etc/sysconfig but I dont seem to have that file for some strange reason.

and gdm is installed as I can start it manually.

Thanks in advance people.

The X-system should start GDM automatically as part of the startx processing. (The /etc/sysconfig/desktop file is only present if you want to over-ride the defaults and use some other display manager.)

By the way, are you possibly logging in at level 3? (I.e., is there a " 3" in your GRUB boot line?) Level 3 does not start the X-server, so you need to do a manual startx after logging in.

Another way you could be booting to the wrong run level is to have the last line of /etc/inittab incorrectly set. It should look like this:
Code:
$ cat /etc/inittab | tail -n 2
# Run xdm in runlevel 5
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
You could check this by seeing what an init 5 does from your command prompt. (man init will show you all the options for the init command.)

Actually I ran into the same issue with Fedora. PTrenholme was right about the runlevel not being correct but he didn't tell you how to set it correctly. The very first command in /etc/inittab probably looks like this:

id:3:initdefault:

You need to change it to this:

id:5:initdefault:

That worked perfectly for me.
