I used without problem FC6 on this PC but I've got installation problem with FC7.


Trying to install FC7 on my PC I get to the point where it says "What type of media contains the packages to be installed."

I enter CDROM and I am prompted with the following:

"Unable to find any device of the type needed for this installation type."

I'm prompted to manually select from a set of drivers. I tried that and all failed. It says I can "use [a] driver disk," but that doesn't work either.

tryed with this workaround without luck.
linux all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf

This suggests that the installer dosn't have the driver for your DVD drive. This is common with SATA drives, especially in conjunction with dodgy BIOS. Always update your BIOS before installing.

The usual trick is to set the drive as "legacy" in BIOS. OR use the IDE controller with another DVD drive just for the installation.

Always read the release notes, install instructions and common problems before installing.

my drive is a PATA drive.
This is strange since as I repeat it works well on all fedora core version expect for fedora 7/

Well, another common reason is that the media didn't quite burn right. Try again, or try this one in another machine.

BTW: I take it that you tried the install without the options first?

Happened for me too, but it waz coz DVD wasn't burnt properly. And well I was stupid enough to download the 3.4 Gb file on Fat32 FileSystem. Showed no errors, but well FAT32 Does not SUPPORT (Windows is crap I know)

Or well another option is copyin the iso image to hard drive and choose installin from there...

I have a similar problem when installing Fedora 7. I have a hardware RAID the is unsupported by fedora normally, and as such have to load drivers using the "dd" option at install. This works fine in Fedora Core 6, however I get a dialog that says "What type of media contains the packages to be installed" in Fedora 7 after loading the RAID drivers from a floppy.

After I select CDROM I get the following:
"Unable to find any device of the type needed for this installation type."

This only happens when I specify the “dd” setup option. With the default install options this dialog does not appear (although Fedora cannot read my RAID because of no drivers).

I know that the install media is good(did a checksum on the dvd image and ran the check media utility during fedora setup). I'm not really sure what try from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As I repeated in other threads F7 uses a too young kernel...
This kernel has some problem with PATA_VIA, SATA_VIA controller and some other else.

This bugs let the kernel recognize only one drives after PATA_VIA ecc. is loaded, so after you loaded this driver you've got only one drive, no cdrom...

To avoid that problem, copy F7 iso on a temp partition, install Fedora 7 from that partition, recompile kernel to avoid the problem with cdrom drive.

Also another issue is that most of the downloads @ redhat mirrors are a problem. I tried 3 times then finally downloaded from Bittorrent. Worked like a charm.


It's worth the effort if nothing works.

You want to go into bios and make sure you have your SATA set to it's legacy mode. Then, try entering "linux all-generic-ide nommconf" at the boot: prompt.

However, you should consider a distro with a more recent kernel.
Even better... you could reconfigure your partitions for software raid or even LVM.

i m not able to telnet from other pc to my newly set up fedora 7...

melvinong, you are off topic. You are already getting help with this problem here. Please reply to the posts there and try to be a little more patient.

For those who search "telnet" and arrive here... The simple answer is, "don't". Telnet is insecure. Use ssh instead.
