fedora 6 nvidia

Hello All,

I cannot seem to preview, let alone run, the gl screensavers; and games like cannon smash, and armagetron seem not to work.

ERRORS FOR THE GAMES:

[chern101@localhost ~]$ csmash
datadir = /usr/share/games/csmash
Segmentation fault

[chern101@localhost bin]$ cd /usr/bin/
[chern101@localhost bin]$ ./armagetronad
Error: Error in tString GeneratePrefix() in tools/tDirectories.cpp:1332 :
Relocation error. The binary was supposed to be installed into /usr/bin and found itself in . and could not find out what this means for the prefix /usr.

WHAT I HAVE DONE:

I upgraded from Fedora 5 to Fedora 6. Then, after updateing the OS throughly, I started adding repositories --making sure to disable the livna.repo so that it would not conflict with the dries/freshrpm repositories.

I then "su"ed with password, and entered the following:

yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
yum update kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
service nvidia-glx restart

as found on the fedoraforums site

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf I have this snipet for ya'll --which seems right to me.

Section "Files"

# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
# By default, a font server independent of the X server is
# used to render fonts.
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
FontPath "unix/:7100"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "record"
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "glx"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
EndSection

uname -a gives me:

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 #1 SMP Fri Nov 10 12:45:28 EST 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

rpm -qa | grep kernel yeilds:

kernel-headers-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6
kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6

and then I got a little manic and typed stuff like:

service nvidia-glx restart // I only received positive feed back

setsebool -P allow_execstack=1
setsebool -P allow_execmod=1

nvidia-config-display enable

./nvidia-xconfig

I really do not know how to get this nvidia card to work --it is an GeForce3 Ti 200.

Also, when I start up the NVIDIA display settings it tends to crash when I click on "OpenGl/GLX information"

Thanks for the help!

Oh... I think my kernel is too new. I am going to try reverting to the previous one, and I'll post back to let you all know how it goes.

glxgears works, runs smoothly for a few seconds and then grinds, yet reports

1212 frames in 5.4 seconds = 225.428 FPS

Does anyone know if the offical, i.e. from nvidia, drivers work? I read that the nvidia site drivers can hurt an installation, but the information seemed somewhat old.

I installed nvidia driver, it workes great for FC5 and FC6 (didn't try others). The nVidia official driver is way much better than that comes with FC5 or FC6. I don't understand why people try to use third party drivers while official nvidia driver is there to use. The earlier nvidia driver (a couple of month ago) was trick to install, you will run patches to make it work. Now the new version works just great. You can see big difference by "glxgears" ( ~ 500 vs 22000 fps for my FX 4500, my older card was FX 540, got 11000 fps before I upgrated the video card).
