Fedora 15 install was an absolute mess - how do I roll back or fix w/o losing files?

The title explains it all. I'm having issues with grub, cifs, NetworkManager, nfs, etc etc. It seems restricted to the 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.i686 kernel, and I'm not really sure what to do here. I don't want to lose any of my files.

I'm seeing core dump after core dump, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Is Fedora 15 known to be a mess or am I just having an unlucky install? How do I roll back without losing all of my settings? Ideally, I'd like to try again and hope that I'll be successful the next time around.

Back up your files and then re-install.

That's what the upgrade manual suggested I already have a backup, but I'm hoping to not have to use it.

The main source of my woes is NetworkManager. Sometimes it starts up, sometimes it doesn't. More importantly is this mess which is affecting other users with NFS shares; in my case, it's cifs mounts via NTFS/Windows.

I suspect if I reinstall, I need to reinstall Fedora 14 as Fedora 15 seems pretty unstable.

from your post, it seems you installed Fedora 15 on top of an older fedora install.

Every time I've done this it's been a mess.
people tell you it works, but in my experience, I've always ended up with an unstable system.

So what I do now is:
backup my home directory
erase the disk
install the new Fedora
restore my backup in /home/old-account directory
create a new account
pull documents from /home/old-account into my new account, except settings.
pull a few settings files that I don't want to recreate manually: gnote database, firefox bookmarks and passwords, network manager wifi data (keys etc ...).

It's more work, but it works perfectly each time, compared to almost always failing using upgrade path.

On every system I own I use a separate partition for /home. Including this Fedora.
As an experiment I used preupgrade to go from F13 to F14 - first time I'd used it. Worked a treat.

Today, after seeing this (and other) threads about F15 troubles, decided it was about time to upgrade again. Downloaded the liveCD, and was planning a total replacement (keeping /home) to see how that worked.
No-go; btrfs is now apparently no longer a boot option for the liveCD. Didn't feel like pulling the DVD, so did a preupgrade again instead. Worked a treat.

Don't know how/why people have so much trouble with it.
And yes, I'm anal about backups, so it wouldn't really have mattered if it had all gone to hell in a handbasket.

Edit: forgot to mention this system is chain-loaded from the Win7 loader. All updated (automatically) without any problems. The menu.lst still contains my customised entries from F14.

You must be lucky. preupgrade totally failed for me (it thought my Fedora 14 files were the latest, totally ignoring Fedora 15) to the point that I had to do it all via rpm -Uvh.

I actually have separate partitions for /var, /boot, and /home, so that's no matter... though I guess I need to try again. Looks like that's the only choice I have. Bummer.

Still, with all the issues I'm reading about that consistently are sending me to Bugzilla pages, I can't help but wonder if Fedora 15 was rolled out haphazardly without thorough testing.

I have ceased to use the pre upgrade option, I have a custom layout for my partitions, which I create with Parted Magic. When you upgrade, re-format your root partition, then see how it goes. I find Professor Kriehn's website very useful.

Do a fresh clean new install after formatting the drive to ext4

ten use the back up to move the backed up data over ( data only ) fedora14 config files will mostly not work in 15

consider a "upgrade" using preupgrade as a possible "way around"/"cheat" from doing the RECOMMENDED clean NEW install.
