FC3 looks like FC2

I recently upgraded my FC2 (laptop) system to FC3 via yum.
After getting the new versions of rpm and using wget to get
the new fedora-release rpms; it went smoothly,
however when I boot into the system gnome is still 2.6,
and nothing has changed, yet when I go into the console it
says that I am logged into

Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg)
Kernel 2.6.9-1.3_FC2 on an i686

what do I have to do to get gnome and the rest of the system to
reflect the upgrade?
