I updated udev, and rebooted. but now the cd plays, but no sound comes out.

also, yum seems to be broken. (edit:: yum is working, I forgot about updating that first)

If you had a link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc, your user would own /dev/hdc after login as set up by PAM console (see etc/security/console.perms). If you don't have the link, nothing would give your user access to /dev/hdc.

What player? Digital or analogue playback? The latter needs an audio cable between CD drive and soundcard.

I've tried xmms and gnome-cd and neither devices play sound. and its analog.

(sorry for not giving enough info. I'm on a HP Pavilion laptop, so the cable is definitely plugged in)

Then you may need to fire up alsamixer (or equivalent) and try to un-mute and level up all mixers.

thank you!! CD Volume was muted and off. unmuted, and now the cd player makes sound.
