FC1 is not a new distro, rather an older version of the current Fedora Core 3 (and soon to be FC4). I believe FC1 has the 2.4 kernel, although FC3 I know has 2.6. I run FC3 on one of my boxes and would recommend it for someone starting out. Dont bother with the FC1 cd's as they are almost at the end of their supported life, and check out fedora.redhat.com for more info on FC, (or search around here)
