But when I restart, during startup it shows as mounting /dev/hda6 block device failed and its not mounted, However if i manually mount using mount command it works. What could be the problem?
Distribution: debian with bits of everything stuck on it

You need to add the "auto" option to "rw,umask=002". Cant say I,m to well up on options in fstab but I think adding "user" would also be a good idea.

Thanx Junior Hacker, that helped, I found out its particularly not mounting if the destination directory is inside my /home dir, but it works after i changed the path to /fat-e
