dual boot partition problem

Hey all,
IM trying to dual boot my sony vaio Z1WA. I hav winXP home, and want to install FC4.

I used partition magic to create another partition, what i think is on an already crated partition, when i load from the cd and try to install, I tried first automatic partitioning, and then keep all parttions, but i get this error:

"Could not allocate requested partitions:
Partitioning failed: Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions."

Then it says that i have not defined a root partition which is required for installation of fedora core.

I used partition magic to create a new partition, how should i have done this??
Should i say to make the new partition a primary partition,,,,but wont this conflict with the already defined primary partition???

Thanks for all the help.

Josh

The easiest way to go may be to delete the new second partition that you just created and let the installation program create it. It will also need to create a swap partition.

FOR any interested, i solved my issue:

I created partition magics boot rescue disks.
booted my machine to the disks, and found out that my original windows XP primary partitin was now hidden, So i made it unhidden, and wallla, issue solved.

thanks all

You know, I had the exact thing happen to me once, but I totally forgot about it. Using partition magic to resize the partition resulted in the first partition being marked as hidden. Sorry I didn't think of it.

Some distro's will let resize the NTFS partition for you during the installation. I just resized the NTFS partition on my laptop using the YaST installer. Mandrake will also resize it . I've never had a problem losing data using either.

Originally, Mandrake used code written by the company that produces Partition Magic to do the resizing, but now I think both Mandriva and SuSE use the parted program.
