cdrecord -scanbus

Using grub as bootloader and hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi where hdc is DVD and hdd is DVD writer , when logged in as normal user the o/p from cdrecord -scanbus only shows my writer , yet when logged in as root and perform the same command the o/p from the scan shows both devices , dvd reader device 0 and writer device 1 !!! . Why can't the normal user scan the bus??
Thanx in advance

"Why can't the normal user scan the bus??"

One possibility is that the two devices may be set up differently in /etc/fstab. Check /etc/fstab.

do
cdrecord --help

you'll see that to scan the bus you HAVE to be root!
At a guess, I'd say that the idea is that the sys-admin is supposed to set up the hardware and apps and normal users just use them. Possibly to stop ordinary users from reconfigering the system?
