ATI frame rate

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how to improve the frame rate, short of recompiling the kernel. I dont know how to compile my own kernel but if someone could tell me a little bit about that it would be great. Anyhow, I have the new ati drivers up and running with 3d support, but im only getting around 760 fps and i know people with lower models were getting way more than me. So if you have any ideas as to how i might fix that id be very grateful thanks.
