I downloaded from bittorrent. checksum says its okay, media check says its okay but it just sits there at the boot option without even getting to the install page. Tried burning the boot.iso from the same image but get the same thing. Quite keen to get an OS with apache 2, php5 and mysql 4.1 but my options are limited at the moment. Might just have to yum from rawhide to get these......

I would suggest booting isolinux from the hard drive if you already have linux installed

you just copy the vmlinux and the ramdisk image from CD1 or boot.iso and then add a grub (or yaboot or lilo) entry to boot it.

Hi Gecko,

I'm running a Duron, but I think Salpula was using the PPC version on a G4.
What are you using?

Not yet. I tried updating everything from the development tree and had no luck. . . I was hoping the new x or new gnome versions in there would fix it. Next up I am going to try and mess with xorg configs and hopefully that will fix it.

PPC = mac i.e. g4, g5, g3, ibook, powerbook, imac, emac, etc.
i386 = intel, amd (actually 586 I think but its close enough), etc.

I have found that it doesn't actually hang, if you let it sit for 10 minutes or so it does eventually complete booting. I am also updating from the development tree, it said I had over 400 updates available! That seems wrong, I picked a few (new kernal, X and Gnome) it hasne't finished but I was also hoping for some success.

Are you running AMD as well?

They took out XFce and it has a beta version of GNOME 2.10 when 2.10 is released.

So if you have limited resources you must install as console only and get everything working for Internet travel so you can download XFce with yum. Talk about the worst customer experience in the world!

Then I would have thought they would have left XFce in for the very reason they explained in the FC3 initial install GUI and they would be adding Window Managers and not removing them and using beta versions.

And and and....

They should have taken a poll as to who liked what on their site for window managers or what I would have done would be to have the top ten managers in their with no default choice picked, screenshots of what each look like when you click the link beside the choice and of course and explanation of how much memory the window manager would use, etc.

Exclamation

My most recent install booted right to a login prompt and allowed me to log in, I am posting from it now. I have yet to get sound working but gnome and X are running great at 1024x768, I selected the default LCD monitor and then radeon mobility 9200, had to add Option "UseFBDev" "true" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf under device.

I installed all of X, gnome, and KDE, all their development packages, all the configuration tools, all the system tools, and all the administrative tools and it worked. im not sure what did it. . . . but other than adding all that to the workstation install I did nothing different.

So far so good.

Where is it hanging?

Mine was hanging right at the start of X/gnome before I got a login I just had a mouse that I could move, i could drop to a shell and Kill X but I only got it working once I re-installed with about 3.3 gb install by adding all the admin tools, preference tools, system tools, gnome, X, X development, gnome development, kde, kde development. and made sure all packages in each of those were checked. I didn't have to do anything special. . . .it just worked that time

If you do the upgrade from FC3 xfce will still be there.
