2.6.6 Kernel

Using this to fix the Nvidia problem but I now can't find an NTFS rpm for 2.6.6 - can I reinstall Fedora Core 2 with an old 2.4.x series kernel so I don't have these probs.....?

Why not just compile ntfs support into 2.6.6?

Because

I'm a noob and I didn't really understand what I was doing compiling the kernel - just followed some instructions and it was all a bit scary - not sure I could do it again And it took ages! Perhaps I should read a noobs guide to adding kernel modules Can anyone point to suitable threads??

Take a look at this article on the LQ Wiki:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Compiling_a_Kernel

Compiling a new kernel can take a while - My main machine only takes minutes but I was working on an old machine at work which took all night. You can soon cut down the time by creating a small kernel with only the items you need. For instance, you probbaly only have one network card so why compile modules for 50?

The same goes for filesystems and graphics cards etc.

I agree with david about customising the kernel to suit your system, the kernel rpm is more generic to support most hardware. However if this scares you then you might want to take a look at this page for compiling the kernel. The first time you compile your kernel will always be the largest, but any future compiles after that doesn't take long.
