2.6.5 kernel panic

I just compiled the 2.6.5 kernel (manually went through config, etc) and did a make install.

My grub conf is as follows:

title Fedora Core (2.6.5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5 ro root=LABEL=/1 hdb=ide-scsi rhgb
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.5.img
title Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp ro root=LABEL=/1 hdb=ide-scsi rhgb
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp.img
title Redhat
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1

Original smp kernel still works, and other than kernel/initrd, the settings are exactly the same. However, I get the error "Kernel panic: unknown-block device (0,0)" when I try to boot into the 2.6.5 kernel. Any ideas?

kernel panic

I have not looked into this yet, but I will be upgrading my fedora kernel soon. It appears you have IDE hard drives and the way I understand the 2.6 kernel is that IDE will no longer require the SCSI emulation. You will probably have to configure the kernel without this support or with modules that can be unloaded. The grub will also need to be edited.

Thank you for the reply.

hdb is a dvd-rw drive, and as such requires SCSI emulation for dvd burning. hdc is the drive I'm booting from, and hdd is a data drive. hda is a dvd-read drive.

Still not sure what the issue is, but I'm going to explore further another day.

One a side note -- the kernel that comes with Fedora is 2.4.22-1.2115. This kernel is impossible to compile modules with; something is very wrong with a modules.(?) and I get about 20 pages of cascading errors from one dependent file to another. If anyone knows about THIS particular issue, I would be much obliged.
