XFree86 and mouse

I am using ATI radeon 7000, and i cannot start the xserver. when i do XFree86 -configure, it gives me the following:
"XFree86 is not able to detect your mouse.
Edit the file and correct the DEVICE.
Your XF86config file is /root/XF86Config.new
To test the server, run XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
"
when i test the server it does not start. BUT if i do:
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse
it does not give me any error. then if i press startx a grey screen with the mouse static will appear forever.
any ideas how to solve the problem?

try to edit the XFree's config file it tells you - manually. find the section which handles mouse, and change the options if they're wrong...there should be help inside the file for you

it should be something like this, but of course change it according to what kind of mouse you have (mine is an optical Logitech, usb/ps2)

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "off"
Option "Buttons" "3"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Thanks a lot for the reply. Apparently still i can not make it work. when i startx i get "no screens found", and when i do "XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new" i get a grey screen (like when x is starting) with the mouse static. Any idea?

I like the new line that most configurators are using now (especially the ones on the live cds):

AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse doesn't work

Add that, regardless of your luck. Hee hee. At least you'll know the rest of your config is right.

Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
AllowMouseOpenFail
EndSection
But back to your mouse. What kind is it?

You could try for:

Code:
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
or

Code:
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

yeah, at least try out the

Option "Protocol" "Auto"

as vectordrake says. and also see to your XFree's logfile (should be /var/log/XFree86.0.log for your first x-server...but if it's not, check out /var/log/ if it's on another name) and especially the last lines, when the error occurs...they might have a piece of more precise information about what really went wrong.
