What does reportbug uses to send email

I was wondering (this may be a stupid question) what program (sendmail,etc) does "reportbug" uses while sending out email when we submit the bug report.

I particularly have not configured any email program on my Lenny installation but still somehow reportbug is always able to send out email successfully.

Note that I answered "n" to the following reportbug set-up question:
Code:
Do you have a "mail transport agent" (MTA) like Exim, Postfix or SSMTP configured on this computer to send mail to the Internet? [Y|n|q|?]? n

Please enter the name of your SMTP host. Usually it's called something like "mail.example.org" or "smtp.example.org". Just press ENTER if you
don't have one or don't know.
<enter>
As far as I understand to send out email ones needs to enter details like SMTP, username, password, etc. but even without that information reportbug sends out email just fine.

How?
