w. placement g2+mc // lvm module // fcron

some things i'm trying to get working:

1.
i use the gnome2 windowmanager and metacity. m.c. is afaik the part which is responsible for window-placement. i'd like to modify that since nearly everthing pop's up in the upper left corner.
is there a way to change that or should i use another wm?

2.
i lately installed lvm on my old server/gateway-box. it's running sarge with kernel-ver 2.4.23 (need it for badram+scsiidle) without modules. at bootup, when lvm (exactly vgscan) starts it says:

----snip----

Setting up LVM Volume Groups...
vgscan -- reading all physical volumes (this may take a while...)
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.23/modules.dep (No s..)
<repeated x4>

vgscan -- found inactive ....

----snip----

that just bothers me, but lvm is working unfailingly. i checked the daemon startupfiles, created a empty modules.dep for lvm, ... but couldn't get rid of that message. it's lvm10 and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LVM & _DM (< i actually don't need the DeviceManager for lvm 1.x - right?!) is compiled IN.
any ideas?

3.
does anybody use the "fcron" cron-replacement? i'm getting quite huge load at 6 o'clock and i allready move some to ../cron.daily01 and ../cron.daily02 and niced them :-) anyway the old box chrashes (very rarely) - so i look out for a smarter way and run them poucoapouce (but wn't use anacron). the machine's up 24/7. someone empirical knowledge / results with fcron?

THX,
lg mritch.

About the wm problem, some of my friends say they prefer to use xfwm4 instead of metacity in Gnome. I'm not Gnome user myself, so I cannot say exactly what the benefits of this change are, but having used XFCE4 for some time (I currently prefer WindowMaker) I know that xfwm4 has a "window snapping" feature, which makes the behaviour of application windows feel more regular and reliable than in most other window managers. Perhaps you should give xfwm4 a try.
