Using apt-get with dotdeb packages

Hi, I'll start with the obligatory disclaimer - i.e. i've never touched a linux box before this week, so go easy

Right, I managed to get myself through an ftp install of debian ok, and seem to have everything in working order. Version is 3.1.

I now want a functioning web-server for developement purposes using apache2 / php5 / mysql4.

My apt-get install of apache2 seemed to go smoothly and I have a viewable test page @ localhost. So far, so good.

It soon became obvious that PHP5 wasn't going to install from the standard apt-get sources, so after a bit of googling I came across the dotdeb pakages and added the source to my sources.list file.

apt-get install mysql-common mysql-client mysql-server

seemed to go ok, but so far i've had no way of verifying this. So did

apt-get install php5-mysqli

which completed without errors.

Now i'm stuck. I tried the standard <?php phpinfo(); ?> file in /var/www/test/ but it just shows the apache2 default page.

I've tried following various guides but nothing seems to be in the directories they point to ( /usr/local/apache2 , /usr/bin/apxs2 etc... none of these files seem to exist.

Also, my httpd.conf file seems to be in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf - is this correct?

Basically, I need a bit of hand-holding through the initial configuration because my only previous experience is with php5 on IIS and xampp. I want to learn how to not rely on these all-in-one packages.

Perhaps I have bitten off more than I can chew by attempting to learn linux *and* apache config all at once.

I remember messing with a similar problem a while back; I found installing the package "phpmyadmin" helped, just because it did all the magic to get apache with php working on my system. Maybe it doesn't work with apache2 however; I don't really know. Worth a try, though.

phpMyAdmin would be great, and i'll be installing it at some point, but

apt-get install phpMyAdmin

tries to install php4 and I need php5.
