User login without password

Hello,

There is a possibility of "time out" or "boot" automatic login without password using gdm.
There is a nice theme that shows all users and allows you to pic one and then log in, after entering password...

Is there a possibility to login without authorisation - just to click on user's picture and log in without password in the manned automatic login is done (timeout or boot)

This is for family members - I don't want them to enter password each time but I do want ot have separate users.

Thanks

It's been a while since I've used gdm. I seem to recall that gdmsetup doesn't have option for passwordless login but you should be able to set it by editing /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I don't currently have gdm installed so I cannot confirm this but take a look and see for yourself.

I may be wrong, but it might be enough to just delete those users' passwords. root should be able to do that:
Code:
# passwd one_of_your_users
Enter one_of_your_users' password:
It is too short!
Enter one_of_your_users' password again:
It is too short!
Password successfully changed.
Or something like that, IIRC.

Else you'll have to edit /etc/passwd* by hand...

Yves.

If you get the passwordless login enabled, remember to disable remote logins (I think there's an option for this in gdmsetup). It's very unsafe to run a passwordless login system with remote logins enabled.

Thanks I'll take a loon on gdm.con

One more:
Can I set firewall on external internet to prevent remote loging and enable remote login at home LAN?

What firewall is easier to use/configure? What package to install... I've seen number of firewalls - is it installed by default.

(Sorry for too many questions)

Yes, I think that's possible, although I cannot say for sure because I personally haven't (yet) tried to set up a home LAN. However, I've got some older computers lying around, so it's just a matter of time before I try that.

Easy firewall? A Gnome-based FireStarter is nice and for KDE there's GuardDog. These both have GUI frontend but sometimes it's easier to use a ready-made configuration script that you run from the command line. I use FireHOL -- check out my post on the first page of macondo's sticky thread at the top of this forum.
