Wrong, x-window-system-core is enough to have X up and running and install KDE. Since the core installed fine as you mention it should have picked all the dependencies aswell. That's the good thing about debian.
What is the exact error you are getting? What have you used to install Debian? Are your apt sources pointing to stable or testing?

We'll go from there

I believe you will also need to, at the very least, install an xserver in order to get KDE running.
