I use Debian Lenny on desktop. On bootup I get this strange message
Code:
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1
Question one: what is hub 2-0:1.0? A utility? A library? A module?
Queston two: what does "enumerate" mean in this context?
Question three: I can't figure out what "port" is meant:
a networking port
something on the motherboard
one of several I/O port/connector/sockets on the back of the computer? (Hope you know what I mean--- you stick USB connectors into them to connect your computer to a USB device, such as a USB mouse.)
the one and only networking port/connector/socket on the back of the computer.
Possibly relevant:
I sometimes but not always have a USB cable connecting my printer to one of the USB ports/connectors on the back of the computer at boot time. But the message always refers to "port 1", never 2,3,4.
due to lack of options for getting on the Net, I use an Actiontek router which demands to be given 192.168.0.1 which would otherwise be taken by my computer, which instead gets 192.168.0.2. (Grasping at straws...)
Any ideas what is going on here?

Reason: solved
Well, basically it's saying it can't figure out what to do with the device sitting on that port on that particular usb hub (which may be entirely internal to your computer.) How many usb devices/hubs do you have connected to the system?
So we're definitely talking about a USB port on the back of my computer?
@rweaver:
One of the strange things about the message is that I typically have 0-1 USB devices connected to various of the four USB "physical ports" (connector sockets) on the back of my desktop computer. But I always get this strange message, always mentioning "port 1".
I take it you are sure the message refers to the "physical port" labeled 1 on the back of my computer? (Any idea how I can tell which port is labeled 1 by the OS?) If so, I wonder if the problem might be that a wiring problem has developed with that port. Or that somehow the OS got permanently confused into looking for a device there, not finding it, and inappropriately giving up? If I open it up, what should I look for on the circuit board on the other side of the physical ports which might indicate a wiring problem or...?
@jim_p:
I use PS/2 connections to video and mouse, not USB connections. I don't use USB sticks. The only USB device I use is the USB connection to my printer (I could also use a double digit pin type connector, forget what it's called).
After more checking I have concluded that the strange message at bootup is indeed due to my printer, even though the same message appears saying "port 1" regardless of which (physical) port (on the back of the computer) the connector (of the cable to the printer) is actually plugged into.
