during boot up i get this message
'you passed an undefined number, choose 1 - 6 or press space'
so i press space and boot fine, no problem.
this is just irritating, does anyone know how to get rid of this message.

your bootloader is trying to use a vesa mode that your video card
doesn't support, or isn't supported by that kernel.
changing the vga entry in your bootloader should fix that.
grub will pick up the change auto.
lilo would have to be reinstalled after the change.
/etc/lilo.conf
mine is vga=4
comment that similar line out with
# vga=4
and save and exit.
then run the command lilo
