sound is mute & time is not accurate @ Unstable, 2.6

Hi,

Although I consider my self as an intermediate linux (debian) user, this time I really have no clue.

I am using Debian unstable and kernel is 2.6.16

Time is always wrong after each restart I found my self at GMT+5. I re-adjust time, reboot, and again gmt+5 sometimes gmt+4. I did run some command from the konsole but after rebooting my system again back to the original time. I synchronized my system's clock with internet servers and ntp is enabled.

And

Sound is, by default, always mute. Worked hard on alsa and oss and some other drivers but couldnt changed the fact.

Any idea?
Thanks

What does the output of these two commands show?

Code:
grep -i utc /etc/default/rcS
# Set UTC=yes if your system clock is set to UTC (GMT), and UTC=no if not.
UTC=no

cat /etc/timezone
Canada/Atlantic
And do you dual boot with windows on the machine if not what is the time set to in your BIOS local time or GMT/UTC? BTW what timezone are you in?

Usually running alsamixer as normal user to raise/umute the volumes of the master and pcm channels will work them being saved on shutdown. If not after raising/unmuting try running alsactl store as root to save the settings manually.

For the sound, take care that your wm doesn't try to restore settings, sometimes it conflicts with default alsa. It was my case on kde took me some time to find out the problem..

Thank you for your help guys.

Although it took a long while to figure it out, I managed it at last. It was just because of Gnome. Uninstalled and installed -it was all fine.

And when everything was broken under Gnome, KDE was serving well: wm is important.

Thank you for your advices.
