Question some problem with keyboard

I'm an to Linux so sorry if I'll sound stupid, previously I had exprience with RH, Slax and Knoppix, now I'm finally got Debian and it seems just what I need
Ok my problem is that keybord didn't act like it should, e.g. when I'm trying to put "|" in text mode I've got "~", when I'm using X all keys work like it should, previously I also have trouble when backspace won't work in some cases. I guess I've put wrong locale or something during installation...
So my question how I can correct it without reinstalling debian, where I can find config file which configure textmode(as if I understand linux conception correctly XFree86 settings affect only X and not textmode)?
Thank you in advance!

dpkg-reconfigure console-common should allow you to change the keyboard.

thanks Stepehen! I'll try this. But what about config file do you have idea where all settings are stored as maybe I would avoid whole setup procedure by editing some textfile?

you probably left the default 'us' in place instead of changing it to 'uk', do you use a ukrainian keyborard?

I use a spanish one, so during the installation, i wrote 'es'.

Steven, thanks a lot! that was just what I need! in a halfminute I've make it work

macondo, I guess my problem was that I've choose UA during installation as this time I've provided Russian charset and it work like a charm anyway it's working now and I've wrote down this useful command in my notes just in case I've same problem in future.
