slow touchpad on toshiba tecra s2

I've just purchased a second hand Toshiba Tecra S2 and installed Debian Etch on it after resizing successfully the Windows partition to 10 GB. I am only keeping it just in case as I have no use for Windows.

The only thing that did not work satisfactorily (in Debian) was a very slow touchpad, so I googled and found an answer that suggested to modify xorg.conf.

I did that and it solved the problem but created a new one.

When I log in as another user, the touchpad works as expected but when I log back to the original user, the cursor is frozen and the only way out is to turn the power off.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to solve it or how to find what it is?

This machine has a 15" screen with a resolution set at 1024x768.

Here is part of the xorg.config file, commented out is the original section followed by the uncommented suggested replacement.

#Section "InputDevice"
# Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
# Driver "synaptics"
# Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
# Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
# Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
# Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
#EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
Option "LeftEdge" "85"
Option "RightEdge" "1010"
Option "TopEdge" "85"
Option "BottomEdge" "730"
Option "FingerLow" "25"
Option "FingerHigh" "30"
Option "MaxTapTime" "180"

Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.10"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.60"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.2"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
EndSection

Thank you for your help.

Changing "Protocol" section to "alps" worked for me.

Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" -> Option "Protocol" "alps"
