APM works on my Dell Dimension 4100 (six - seven year old technology). ACPI works on my Hewlett-Packard D5305 (two-three year old technology.

One or the other ought to work, but if one doesn't work, try the other one. Like I say, APM works on the old Dell, ACPI works on the newer HP.
