For a while now, I have been running a hd install from knoppix 3.4.
sometimes I change back to my old redhat patition. The problem I am seeing is that with every reboot my time or timezone has been set incorrectly. if I right-click on the clock in kde i can set it correctly, but after a reboot it goes wrong again displaying the wrong time and or timezone..
Is this a bug in this knoppix version or is ther some way I can set it correctly? I am using dialup atm, so using ntpd is not a workable solution i think.
under linux the clock of your motherboard is usually set to GMT or unviersal time. anyway, most people set there time to their local time.
debian check for an file /etc/defaults/rcS to see how the mainclock is set and change the time to the correct value with the files /etc/init.d/hwclock*.
i assume there is your problem.
if ms is running on this machine too and you set the maintime to UTC (=GMT) the clock will go wrong since ms only knows about one timeformat (local time).
as you boot from a readonly medium i don't see an easy way to set your time correctly everytime you startup knoppix.
No M$ on this machine. I haven't had Windblows running in my household for over 4 years.
I run a HD install of knoppix, which is essentially debian with some quircks from knoppix left over.
I will have a look in hwclock. I suppose it goes wrong because takes the wrong timezone, or at least that is what i see in the kde clock.
is there any difference between the clock in your bios and in the booted system? if yes, then there is a prog that adjusts the time with the false offset. the debian way doin' this is via the above mentioned scripts - so i think knoppix won't differ there. see if /etc/default/rcS is on your sys. there is a parameter to adjust or else edit /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh
sudo tzconfig
Your current time zone is set to Europe/Amsterdam
Do you want to change that? [n]:
Your time zone will not be changed

i had just rebooted this machine and not touched the tz/clock yet.
I am baffled why it thinks i want a timezone in some banana-republic?
@macondo:
If knoppix is not debian, how do I make it into debian?
I assumed that a hd install from knoppix would just turn into a fancy configured debian system, but I suppose that is not true?
are you sure about that?
Anyway, I am not (read: NOT) installing another distro just yet. I guessed that some magic with apt-get would get me far, after all upgrades from one version to the next are handled with apt-get with no problem. why should this be a problem with knoppix.
Or do you have a grudge against knoppix for some reason?
"i had just rebooted this machine and not touched the tz/clock yet.

must be a bug.
Careful, some of us come from those 'banana republics'

AFAIK, you can't, knoppix is a one time shot with the latest from different repositories (woody, sarge, sid, experimental, marillat, etc) different dependencies, that's why every 2-3 mos you get a new version.
What you are looking for is KANOTIX (check distrowatch.com) it IS Debian Sid with KDE, and you can upgrade, etc.
