System time won't accept new timezone

Editing the clock through the KDE GUI won't set the changes in place. I'm trying to set my timezone to PST but after hitting apply and ok (for 100 times) it keeps going back to UTC. It's updating time correcting from online timeservers but it just won't set my correct timezone. Of course this means the clock on my taskbar and Gkrellm are both wrong by 4 hours. Anyone know another way to set timezone or why these changes will not take effect?

Boot into a console and use timeconfig.

I had this exact problem and it looks like KDE, the clock and the console all had a different idea of what the timezone should be. I killed X, used timeconfig, set the clock, loaded up X and it all worked after that.

Re: System time won't accept new timezone

You did try to change that setting as root?

you could use timeconfig from a terminal instead, while also logged in (or su'd) to root.

You can't change the timezone without being root.

edit: Ledow's solution worked. I had a feeling KDE might be to blame and couldn't remember what the command was to change timezones. Thanks!

Only a few weeks ago the same thing happened to me. Here is what I did (for future viewers of this thread):

1. Log in or open Konsole as root.
2. Run timeconfig. Set the clock to local.
3. Open the KDE Control Center and proceed to the Date and Time option.
4. Click on Administrator mode.
5. Modify the time zone as appropriate.

I hope this helps.
