Hi all,
I am back again with yet another install of sarge and like a lot of others found
that the Xserver would not start..This is what I found in my particular case and therefor should not be written in stone as your problem..
Conditions:AsusP4P800 MB with 512 mb ddr ram ..onboard sound but a PCI NIC card(davicon w/tulip driver)..TRL1013 monitor and an Microsoft ps2 optical explorer mouse..
1: Installed sarge via the FTP network install and chose the desktop installation.
seemed to install fine but after it would not install the dreaded xserver..
2: As a test, I decided to investigate a little on my own based on past history
and help from dead parrot and others.
3; I decided to as root "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86"and do a number of
combinations..I knew from the past that my particular problem was the
optical mouse..I wanted to see if there was any combination that would work
without editing the XF86config-4 file..I went thru every combination of the
ps/2 mice and each time the xserver would NOT start..I could tell because even the
optical light would not illuminate..
4: I decided to try a serial port mouse and after changing in the reconfigure as
described above..I rebooted with the serial mouse and Viola! GUI..Thus this
sealed it that the mouse was my problem..
5: I then decided to try a standard ps2 two button mouse that I had laying
around..One combination booted into GUI but there was no mouse action..
(pointer stayed still even when mouse was moved around)
6: after that I decided to edit the XF86Config-4 file by placing a comment(#) in
front of the section(generic mouse) and each line..Also in the sections
I hashed out the "generic mouse" line
7: I ran the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and set it to /ps2 and Explorer
the explorer mouse..Saved the changes and init 6 to reboot..
8: still would not start x..Then I rememberd something that dead parrot had
suggested and ran as root" apt-get remove udev"...
9: rebooted yet again and my optical mouse lite went on and the Xserver
started and it even scrolled..
Keep in mind this this was my way and it may have not been the best or most painless way..But I learned a little from this..At this piont I dont know what else works or does not work but thats another story....

After thought..I wonder what would have happened if udev would have been uninstalled first?hmmm
