removing modules

Is there any benefit to performance by removing modules from the kernel?

For example, i have kernel 2.4.x installed and with it there are a number of LAN chip drivers loaded.

Of course, due to my luck it doesn't have the drivers for my card (PCI D-Link 520+), which I'm still trying to get working after downloading the binaries.

So, if I don't need those extra LAN drivers should I remove them? Will it make a performance change (faster boot?)?

Probably won't make a difference. Seems like I remember the kernel asks the device what it is, then loads the module for it, as opposed to "test-loading" the module to see if anything claims it. If the latter happened, then many modules would slow down boot times for sure.

Might be wrong though. If you're recompiling the kernel though, yeah, leave them out.

If you've not seen this already, check it out for getting that D-Link running.

Thanks for the link Saraev.

However I haven't built a kernel before and I'm not sure how to do that.

If it helps I switched over to Knoppix to get a more complete tool-set. Have the 9-22 build to install tonight over an older version of Knoppix.

I would just like to use the net-install CD and get what I want later. Is Bunzip and gcc/ other compilers included?

If I had the packages I needed I could futz with gettin the 520 working then apt-get what I want. Knoppix comes with a bunk of junk I don't want/need right now
