I installed Debian base system first using the the net install CD. Then I installed Xorg from testing repo as follow:
and then installed fluxbox from stable repo. by
Also I installed xdm.
I then created a file in root directory called .xinitrc and added the file
exec /usr/bin/fluxbox into. Now I am able to log into fluxbox as a root user. But I am not able to do so using my own user name. At xdm login manager when I type my username and password it brings back the login scree again. But when I boot to the console(text mode) and login with my username and type startx, I am able to boot into fluxbox.

Why this is happening? It seems that only root user can start the XServer.

Any idea? Also is there any to start fluxbox without installing any login managers like xdm,kdm or gdm?

You said it - you used startx to get into fluxbox. So, I could imagine you can run it without xdm, gdm, kdm, (any)dm

Check out that the problem is not caused by permissions - make the .xinitrc file you created readable by all, if it's not:

if you want flux to start automatically, make some scripting to run startx at boot...check the init files

Ok, I have reached a stage where I can start the fluxbox by typing the command startx on root and my own username. Now I want to automate this process. In short how can I make the command startx to execute everytime I log into my account from the console mode. I don;t want to type the startx command. The startx script should be called automatically.

Ok got it. I created a file called .bash_profile and just wrote startx there. And It worked. I hope this is the correct way of doing it?

Any suggestions?
