dmesg is a way to dump the kernel message buffer. (Don't ask me why it's named dmesg and not something that makes more sense like kmesg). Supplying the grep just permits me to narrow it down to specific messages. In this case, I was just looking for indications that it saw your sound card (which it seemed to) or any related errors (which I don't see).

You can try grepping for other things like 'AC '97' or similar to find more details. Or, you could try the old fashioned HEgrep (Human Eye grep) to see if you see anything related.

i dunno if this tells you anmore but... with custom kernel...

Code:
debian:/boot# lsmod | grep ac97
snd_ac97_codec 66788 1 snd_intel8x0
snd 46532 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
EDIT:

ok now i am REALLy confused
i deleted the customenties in /boot, updated menu.ist.. rebooted to 2.6.8-11-686 stock kernel
thinking all would be bak to normal... well kinda

xmms still doesnt play sound, ALSA was set to output.. i changed it to OSS Driver... and i have SOUND?!? this is confusing me..

now lsmod gives me
Code:
nexus@debian:~$ lsmod | grep ac97
ac97_codec 19916 1 i810_audio
snd_ac97_codec 78360 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm 92712 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd 55300 6 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
a whole lot more ac97's in there this time

I guess the stock kernel has OSS emulation for ALSA switched on. Is there a reason you deleted the other kernels?

Oh it is fun, just takes getting used to

i still dont understand what i changed to make my sound not work...
maye i should try again and only remove all the definate unnesisary stuff, tape back up acorn file system (what the heck is taht??) scsi, wan devices etc... then at least i could "trim" it down a little, not as much as i would like though

one more question...i promise :D

ok, i just got one more question...
for xconfig to be used i keep seeing references to "uses the QT libraries"...

where/how or whom do i get these QT libraries? i thought it was simple as apt-get install qt-devel like ncurses..
i thought wrong.

EDIT:

found my answer apt-get install libqt3-mt-dev for QT devs
