dmesg is a way to dump the kernel message buffer. (Don't ask me why it's named dmesg and not something that makes more sense like kmesg). Supplying the grep just permits me to narrow it down to specific messages. In this case, I was just looking for indications that it saw your sound card (which it seemed to) or any related errors (which I don't see).
You can try grepping for other things like 'AC '97' or similar to find more details. Or, you could try the old fashioned HEgrep (Human Eye grep) to see if you see anything related.
ok now i am REALLy confused
i deleted the customenties in /boot, updated menu.ist.. rebooted to 2.6.8-11-686 stock kernel
thinking all would be bak to normal... well kinda
xmms still doesnt play sound, ALSA was set to output.. i changed it to OSS Driver... and i have SOUND?!? this is confusing me..
i still dont understand what i changed to make my sound not work...
maye i should try again and only remove all the definate unnesisary stuff, tape back up acorn file system (what the heck is taht??) scsi, wan devices etc... then at least i could "trim" it down a little, not as much as i would like though
