Well, I see the sound modules still loaded. And if you built in vfat, you should be able to access that partition. I would build in ext3 as well, by the way.

i know i'm missing something here i just for the life of me see it :/
when i try to access the drive now i get
Code:
debian:/home/nexus# mount /dev/hdb1 /media/win/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb1,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
so i dot what it says...
Code:
debian:/home/nexus# dmesg | tail
speed: 100
autonegotiation: yes
duplex mode: full
flowctrl: symmetric
irq moderation: disabled

hmmm maybe i need to chage the charset for fat?
i left it as default

sorry for the long post.... just a little stumped
i'm getting pretty fast at kernel compiles on the plus side
EDIT:
ok a whole lot a googling gave me some info
apparently its somethign to do with native language support
so i checked....

Try adding that codepage 437 into your compile. Your sound card, though the title is different from mine, appears in exactly the same place. (I'm on a 2.6.12 kernel), so it should be working. Do you get any sound errors, or just not hear anything?
I think fat support will be working once i finish the compile. i enabled
Code:
x x < > Codepage 437 (United States, Canada)
which i should have seen before :/
i checked the asus website and they call it ALC850, i thought it was i810 for some reason...
as for errors, xmms gives me
Code:
Please check that:
your sound card is configured properly
ctrl+alt+f1 shows me an error on opening
Code:
nexus@debian:~$ xmms

thats every option in there. The only one i have load is <*> Intel i8x0/MX440, SiS 7012; Ali 5455; NForce Audio; AMD768/8111
which worked in 26.8.-2 i dunno whats diggerent in 2.6.8-11
I did read the readme and readme.debian, neither mention any removal of sound devices.
i did check xmms's options/preferences to see what was listed. There are only 4 Audion !/O Plugins / input plugins
1) CD audio
2) MPEG Layer 1/2/3
3) Tone Generator
4) Wave Player
EDIT:
ummm i think i see something in menuconfig that was nt enabled...
Code:
<*> OSS Mixer API
< > OSS PCM (digital audio) API
i see OSS PCM under help is /dev/dsp
this wouldnt happen to be the issue would it??

I wouldn't worry about OSS (I don't use it at all), but you need to make sure the "Output Plugin" in XMMS's preferences is set to the ALSA output plugin.

Hrrm, really odd. All the modules for sound and alsa (if built as modules) are loaded?
Do you see anything sound-related in /dev? (i.e., snd*, sound*, dsp, mixer)
I may have asked this before, but couldn't find the answer at a glance in the thread. Are you using udev or devfs? If you aren't certain, just do 'ps -ef | grep dev'.
Originally posted by Matir I may have asked this before, but couldn't find the answer at a glance in the thread. Are you using udev or devfs? If you aren't certain, just do 'ps -ef | grep dev'.
Code:
nexus@debian:~$ ps -ef | grep dev
nexus 2335 2234 0 14:59 pts/0 00:00:00 grep dev
The discover1 pacakage tries to figure out what hardware you have and load the modules for them. Very nice. Except that it loads the OSS sound modules. To prevent it from doing this, add the line:
skip i810_audio
to the file /etc/discover.conf. Put the name of the OSS module for your sound card in place of i810_audio. (You can probably figure this out by perusing the output if lsmod.)
