It seems like an X server error. You should check /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

That's unusual. What is the output for "ls -l /var/log/XFree86.0.log"?

You can also check .xsession-errors in your home directory.

because you're new to linux you may find some of these commands useful:

Which version of Debian are you using? 'Sarge' is the last stable version.
When you say you set it up "to go into KDE or whatever" I wonder if that was where it got messed up. Debian defaults to GNOME. Maybe you should try a simple install -- all files in one partition (ext3 file system), after the first reboot after it has installed the basic core system select "Desktop Environment". When it gets to the parts where it asks for domain names etc, just go with the default, leave mail unconfigured. VESA seems at least on my systems to be the easiest video setup.

When you looked at the log what program did you use? (vi, emacs, etc.) There has to be far more info in there and I wonder if it's just being unfamiliar with the app you used to view the log.

You need to configure X server for your hardware before you can get out from the command line interface. Type "su", give root user's password, type "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and give right answers to questions (especially those about your mouse, videocard and monitor). That's the only way out.

The log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) will tell you what settings you need to change in your X server configuration. Try this command:

more /var/log/XFree86.0.log

You can browse the file by pressing the space bar. Lines beginning with (EE) indicate errors. When you reach the end of the file, the last couple of lines should tell you why X server refuses to start. Then you can run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" again and change the settings until you get them right. After you get X server configured correctly for your hardware, then you can start KDE.
