Printer trouble under etch

I did a new upgrade/install of etch and the two printers ( epson 825/usb & mfc 5840 cn/usb) connected are behaving oddly.
They installed and print fine through localhost:631 , but if I try through the desktop/admin/printer testpage or any apps they refuse to print.
They are browsable via the network but also will not print any jobs sent.
The web interface of cups show the jobs as stopped.
Any pointers?

Which printer is set as the default printer in CUPS? If you have the most recent package for CUPS, you can move all existing jobs to the default printer or the printer you really wanted to print to. Perhaps the web browser might have been pointing to the default printer when you really wanted to print to the other? Just a hint.
