Ok, I'm still stuck with getting the X-server to boot! I googled and pulled up any information I could find, e-mailed a guy who had the same problem (no reply in 2 days), etc. and I'm at my limit with this problem. I found a FAQ about the error message here. After reading that guide, I tried a few different things:

Code:
#ps aux | grep `cat /tmp/.X0-lock`
Found that there were no such processes. I also did ls -la in the /tmp directory and found no other locks. Just to be safe I did

Code:
#rm -rf /tmp/.X0-lock
Then I did

Code:
#startx -- :0
And a screen loaded up, but it was just a plain screen with an X cursor in the middle which I couldn't even use with my (USB) mouse. When I did Ctrl+Alt+F1 I found that on the console an error message (forgot what they said exactly) was being printed out every 0.5 seconds. netstat -ln to showed no 6000+ ports being used. I also tried startx with different display numbers (1 and 5) with the same effect.

So finally I just decided to suck it down and forget about my custom kernel for now and just decided to install the 2.6.6 debian packages.

Code:
# apt-get install kernel-doc-2.6.6 kernel-headers-2.6.6-1-686 kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686
The documentation and headers fine, but the kernel image gave me something weird:

Code:
Selecting previously deselected package module-init-tools.
(Reading database ... 105323 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking module-init-tools (from .../module-init-tools_3.1-pre5-1_i386.deb) ...
Selecting previously deselected package kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686.
Unpacking kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686 (from .../kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686_2.6.6-1_i386.deb) ...
Setting up module-init-tools (3.1-pre5-1) ...

Setting up kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686 (2.6.6-1) ...
cpio: /etc/modprobe.conf: No such file or directory
cpio: /lib/modules/modprobe.conf: No such file or directory
/initrd.img does not exist. Installing from scratch, eh?
Or maybe you don't want a symbolic link here. Hmm? Lets See.
"Lets See."? O_o So great. Now installing my custom kernel seems to have messed up the package installation.

Please, can someone either help me fix the X server error with my custom kernel or tell me how to get the package kernel installed? I just want to get A 2.6.6 kernel installed
